Feb.8th- Feb. 12th

On Tuesday, February 9th, we will have a CRCT prep night! During this time parents will get tips for preparing your child for the CRCT.
The workshop starts at 6:00 p.m.
Please plan to attend!!

Also, Study Island is up and running! This programs has a direct correlation to the standards, needed for the CRCT.
Students work on Study Island at home, but they have their codes where they can work on it at home also.

Feb. 1st- Feb 5th

Study Island is up and running!! Your child should have brought home their code this week.
If you have a computer at home, please allow your child to work for at least 20 minutes day on Study Island. If not, students will have time to work on Study Island during school. This program focuses on standards and skills that will help your child prepare 4 the CRCT. Also remember SchoolBox is a great resource for buying books that your child can use at home to prepare for the test. And as always please visit our parent resource room for a variety of resources.

January 25-29th, 2010

On Wednesday, January 27th, we will have awards day and a mandatory 5th grade parent meeting. It is imperative that you attend the meeting! We have scheduled 2 meeting times: 9:30 a.m and 6:00 p.m. We will be discussing important issues about events and testing.
If possible, please go to SchoolBox and purchase a test prep book for your child. This will help them prepare for the upcoming CRCT.

Math
We are working on area and measurement.

Reading:
We are working on reference skills and main idea and supporting details.

Writing:
Please have your child continue to work on persuasive, informational, and narrative essays.

January 18th-22, 2010

Happy New Year!! The CRCT and writing test are quickly approaching. Because of budget cuts, Fulton County has decided not to conduct Summer School. It is imperative that students read and complete their homework nightly.

Math
In math we are working on area and circumference.

Reading/Language Arts
We will continue working on comprehension skills and text structures and features. We will work on reference skills this week.

Science
We are working on constructive and destructive processes in the Earth.

Dec. 14th- Dec. 18th

This is the last week of the semester. We will have our winter break party on Thursday, December 17th. Students will receive a winter packet on Friday, so that they can continue keeping sharp, on the skills we have learned thus far. Thanks for making this semester great!!!

In all subjects this week, we will review the concepts we have learned thus far.

December 7- December 11th

Please return the field trip letter, as soon as possible. We are trying to get the number of children that will actually be attending. Also, please look for information on our winter break party.

Math
We are continuing our work on fractions, decimals, and percents.

Reading
We will focus on cause and effect and comparing and contrasting.

Science
We are continuing our study on genes, learned and inherited traits.

Nov.30th-Dec.4th

Hope you had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving! It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the first semester! But we still have lots of work to do!

Math:
In math we will be exploring decimals, fractions, and percentages. Students will be able to look at the price of an item and determine a percentage off.

Reading/Language Arts
In reading we will work on summarizing and cause and effect. In Language Arts we will work on reflective pronouns.

Science:
In science we will continue our study on inherited traits.

Writing:
We will work on our writing having a “voice”. Students will gain an understanding that their paper reflects them.

November 23-27, 2009

Please be sure to continue to check your child’s agenda. Over the break, please make sure your child continues to read and explain to you what they are reading. Please expect your child to bring home a skill packet over the break.

Math
We will continue our focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.

Language Arts/Reading

This week our focus will be cause and effect and summarizing a text. We are also working on possessive pronouns.

Science

In science we are discussing inherited traits. Students will learn the difference between inherited and learned behavior.

Writing

In writing students will continue discussing “voice” and how to use it in their persuasive writing pieces.

November 16-20, 2009

The end of the semester is quickly approaching. Please make sure that your completes their homework daily. Students should write their homework down in their agenda each day.  Also please make sure your child comes with their necessary supplies daily.

Math

In Math we are studying adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Please practice these skills daily. Your child should have homework in math each night. They are given a quiz or test each Friday.

Reading/Language Arts

In reading we are studying summarizing text. We will continue our study on main idea and story elements. In language we will focus on pronouns. In writing our students are learning persuasive writing.

Science

In science we are working on inherited traits. This should be an exciting unit for our students!

Again the end of the semester is quickly approaching. Let’s work together to keep our students prepared and focused!

Week of November 2nd-6th, 2009

Please make sure you are checking your child’s agenda daily. Also, please check your child’s supplies. Students should have pencils, paper, crayons, and scissors daily. Please visit the parent resource center! This is a great place to check out materials to help your child at home.

Reading/Language Arts

This week we will work on multiple meaning words. We will also focus on main idea, and story elements. Please make sure your child reads their assigned reading, and completes their assigned reading assignments.

Math

We are continuing our focus on fractions. We are working on equivalent, comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Social Studies

We are working on the Reconstruction Period.

Writing

We are working on persuasive writing this week.
